Why upgrade your exhaust?

That’s the million dollar question. Pre year 2000 one could say the last thing on a vehicle makers mind was the exhaust. Pipes and mufflers then were very restrictive and received little design attention for gas flow. Upgrade the exhaust on any Diesel years ago and it was an instant power gain due to the free flow nature of a larger exhaust. As emission rules etc. started to toughen up so was the budget increased by vehicle makers to design exhausts that would keep up with the ever increasing engine performance whilst containing noise and exhaust emissions.

So one could say that on late model engines there is no need to upgrade the exhaust. Well this can be quite true as some newer vehicles gain little to no power with an exhaust upgrade BUT some models do still get gains. Whatever the reason the consideration to upgrade an exhaust is usually based on the fact that the operation of the vehicle is coming to the design edge of what the manufacturer thought it might be doing. In other words most upgrades would have a good reason to be done if towing is a daily chore and any gain achievable is appreciated. Whatever your reason it will be a valid one so keep reading to understand what type of system you might choose.

So which type of steel should I use?

Aluminised Steel: For every day driving and 4WDing the best ‘price vs durability’ compromise is an Aluminised Steel system. These systems are dipped and coated in an aluminium to protect the pipe and resist corrosion.

Stainless Steel: If you are travelling regularly on the beach for fun or fishing then best to choose our Premium Stainless Steel system. Stainless steel exhausts offer the best corrosion protection for wet salty conditions.

Mild Steel, Aluminised Steel or Stainless Steel?

Day in and day out, automotive exhaust systems are exposed to mixture of carbon monoxide, moisture, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and more. These gases condense and ruin the system internally. The external deterioration is also contributed to by corrosive salts, mud and moisture. These elements combined with high temperatures, vibration, uneven road surfaces, emission control requirements and different traffic patterns make it simple to decipher the need for a durable and lasting car exhaust system. No exhaust should be made of plain steel or it will corrode and rust in no time at all.

Should it be 2 ½ inch or 3 inch pipe?

Our systems have been designed to take in the vast array of operating conditions. The pipe size offered is based on consideration of the operation of each vehicle. Whilst a smaller pipe might be better at light loads and low RPM, it may not be as efficient under loaded conditions We have generally found the best compromise is 3 inch.

Standard Muffler or Vortex muffler?

The standard muffler we use is designed for a reduction in exhaust gas back pressure whilst keeping noise at bay. Pretty much your standard free-flowing muffler. The Vortex muffler is revolutionary in that it incorporates an internal design that extracts exhaust gases as they increase. This technology allows exhaust gas back pressure to be reduced and is claimed to reduce exhaust gas temperatures somewhat more than a standard muffler whilst keeping noise at bay.

Some information to consider when further modifying your EFI Diesel.

Snorkel: Whilst a snorkel is "said" to have air flow benefits, these benefits are generally 'plausible'. The Electronic engine management system on the engine will make minute adjustments "if" airflow is to change. So on modern EFI controlled Diesels its best to consider a snorkel more for crossing deep water than for the 'possible' air flow benefits.

Exhaust upgrade: The benefits of an exhaust upgrade vary dramatically between vehicle models. Generally speaking though, less exhaust gas back pressure allows more exhaust gas flow, particularly at higher engine RPM. A larger exhaust will generally mean the turbo spins up a little quicker and, vehicle dependant, the turbo boost may even peak a few PSI higher than normal.

Note about exhaust upgrades: When upgrading an exhaust system be sure to install a catalytic Converter if the original exhaust system included one. To leave this integral component out of the new system may lead to turbo boost fault codes. ALL our exhaust systems come with catalytic Converter where applicable.

Intercooler upgrade: The benefits of an intercooler upgrade will vary between vehicle models. Generally speaking though, it will increase the available oxygen to the engine. A proper 'Bar & Plate" type intercooler upgrade will cool the inlet air temperature more efficiently than the standard intercooler and allow a more dense charge of air into the engine. More air means we can burn more fuel for more power.
