What sort of fuel economy should a 1HZ get?

Q. In your experience, what sort of fuel economy should a 1HZ get? My 100 Series is the five-speed manual, and has front and rear steel barwork, 33in muddies and a drawer system as the only real modifications. I’m not running a winch or dual batteries either. Out on the highway the best fuel economy I’ve ever seen is about 14.5L/100km – that’s at 90km/h the whole way. I thought a diesel would be more economical than this?

A. Its one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ questions I get so often. That’s not bad economy considering the accessories you have on it as well as it being non-turbo and maybe its tune is in need of doing soon. Aerodynamics plays a big part and the higher you lift and the more things sticking out the more gets exposed to wind dragging and holding you back. Tuning correctly may help you a bit (you want to see the before and after air-fuel ratio results to see if its running cleaner for more or same power after tune. Weight- well that would be probably just over the GVM already by the sounds of it (The load it can legally carry). The BIG tyres....they don’t sound a lot bigger BUT can play a big part in reducing power on the ground meaning you need more to do the same work....more needed means more fuel. Just some areas to check and try and change:- Tuning will be something that may help. Weighing it may give you an idea as to why.
